Accelerating 10GbE Deployment with I/O Virtualization

Whereas just few years ago, a typical server had a single high-performance CPU and one or two on-board 1Gb Ethernet NICs, today’s server will typically have two CPUs, each containing up to 6 compute cores and RAM extending into hundreds of Gigabytes. Despite this increase in CPU and memory capacity the two 1Gb Ethernet NICs have remained the same. This has shifted the performance bottleneck away from the CPU: We now have an I/O crisis.

The advent of 10Gb Ethernet sees even more demand placed on server I/O to keep pace with CPU and RAM in today’s multi-core-based servers.

Using Virtensys I/O Virtualization Appliances for 10Gb Ethernet Deployment

Deploying a Virtensys VIO-4000 series I/O Virtualization appliance to share and optimize I/O across groups of servers enables:

  • The server administrator to configure high-performance, multi-core servers with NO local internal I/O.
  • 10Gb Ethernet NICs installed in the I/O virtualization appliance to be configured, optimized, managed and shared across groups of servers using the web-based management UI.
  • The server and Operating System or virtualization hypervisors to see the NICs in the appliance as if they were locally installed adapters.

Specifically designed for 10Gb Ethernet deployments, the 8x 10GbE uplink ports available with the VIO-4004 I/O Virtualization appliance provides a total of 80Gb of bandwidth – which can be managed, optimized, and shared among the attached servers without an additional layer of network switching. It connects directly to the PCIe bus of the connected servers via a single PCIe cable per server.
