Ethernet and Local Direct Attached Storage I/O Virtualization
VIO-4008 Ethernet and Local Direct Attached Storage I/O VirtualizationThe award-winning VIO-4008 consolidates and virtualizes network and local storage connectivity to a rack of servers and provides up to 40Gbps of Ethernet uplink bandwidth and up to 16TB of local storage connectivity to the servers. The VIO-4008 I/O Virtualization system eliminates, consolidates and virtualizes 10GE Ethernet NICs. The VIO-4008 connects to up to 16 servers and shares the physical NICs as virtual NICs (vNICs) between the servers without requiring any changes to the servers, OS, applications or I/O device drivers. The VIO-4008 provides up to 4x 10GE uplinks to the attached servers and connects directly to the corporate network without additional layer of switching. In a similar way, the VIO-4008 also virtualizes up to 2x 6G SAS/SATA MegaRAID HBAs and shares between the server as vHBAs. It also includes 8 disk drive bays that provide >16 TB of local Direct Attached Storage (DAS) that are shared between the servers, thus eliminating the internal drives from the servers. The VIO-4008 supports traditional and SSD drives with different levels of RAID.
The VIO-4008 attaches to each server using a single PCI Express® (PCIe) cable that connects to the server-native PCIe bus and provides 20Gbps bandwidth. The PCIe cable replaces the multiple Ethernet cables per server and carries both Ethernet and DAS traffic. The TOR Ethernet access layer switches are also eliminated. This reduces I/O capital equipment costs and lowers I/O power consumption, server management complexity & operational expenses by more than 60% compared to traditional deployments. The VIO-4008 enables servers to be wired once and than dynamically reconfigured with different Ethernet and DAS profiles - without any physical reconfiguration. It is a lossless and non-blocking system that delivers the full connectivity bandwidth to each server and supports both traditional and converged networks. The total networking bandwidth and storage capacity can be dynamically allocated and shared between servers on- demand. Denser 1U or sub-1U servers can replace traditional 2U or larger servers. The connectivity to the servers is managed as a single entity through a management console.
